Yoga Tools to Use in Challenging Times

This past week has been a challenging one, no matter who you voted for. Many of us are still trying to process the outcome of the election and trying to envision what comes next. In challenging times, I am eternally grateful to have the tools of yoga to fall back on. This week, I was reminded of some teachings of yoga that I'd like to share with you. Election week...

I'm not sure if you're aware, but there's a big election this week. I know, I know, it hasn't been talked about very much, so you might have forgotten about it... I don't even need to tell you that I'm kidding. There has been so much hype, emotion, and, unfortunately, ugliness surrounding this election, that I think we need to empower ourselves with some tools to use this week, so we can stay grounded and compassionate regardless of the outcome of the election.

This is a prayer that I'm sure you've heard before. It's one that I think can be a powerful tool, regardless of your beliefs, to fall back on when we find ourselves overwhelmed or surrounded by frustration, anger, or other challenges.

In honor of the rain

I LOVE the rain. The feeling of it on my face; the sound of the rain on the roof; the sweet smell in the air. It gives us the perfect excuse to snuggle up inside our homes with a good book and revel in an introspective, quiet mood. We are entering the yin months — a time of darkness, cold weather, slowing down and hibernation — a time when we naturally need more rest, sleep, and quiet time. Even though the rain won't last with us in the Bay Area beyond tonight, it's a sweet reminder to begin making space for the natural, seasonal transition from yang to yin.

I had the pleasure of spending this weekend with my nephews. One is 2.5 years and the other is just 3 weeks. Spending time with young kids always reminds me of the joy and wonder available to me in each moment, with just a simple change in perspective. The Guest House

This is one of my favorite poems by Rumi. It paints a persuasive picture of relating to unexpected emotions and experiences as visitors that we welcome into our lives with joy and gratitude. I think we all have some visitors that we would rather shut out of the house — or perhaps some that we don't even hear knocking at the door. I invite you to notice your habits in this regard and to explore inviting those guests in.

Doing yoga is a lot like gardening

I recently started taking dance classes again after a much-too-long, four-year hiatus. Returning to something that was a passion and a big part of my life has been a true joy. I didn't even realize how much I missed dancing until I was about, oh, 3 minutes into my first class back.

“Learn to Be Big and Small at the Same Time”

I was once invited to teach with the Sakyong Mipham Rinpoche, my teacher’s eldest son, in a situation where it wasn’t exactly clear what my status was. Sometimes I was treated as a big deal who should come in through a special door and sit in a special seat. Then I’d think, “Okay, I’m a big deal.” I’d start running with that idea and come up with big-deal notions about how things should be.

Then I’d get the message, “Oh, no, no, no. You should just sit on the floor and mix with everybody and be one of the crowd.” Okay. So now the message was that I should just be ordinary, not set myself up or be the teacher. But as soon as I was getting comfortable with being humble, I would be asked to do something special that only big deals did.

Happy Mother's Day

Happy Mother's Day to all mothers out there!

I feel a lot of pressure to send out a really good email this week in honor of my mom! This is difficult because she is one of my favorite people in the world and my gratitude and love for her aren’t easy to sum up in a few sentences.

One of the things I am the most grateful to her for is that she always brings me joy and comfort. In abundance. Without fail. In honor of my mom, I’d like to share the following blessing, which also fills me with joy and comfort and is one that I often read in my yoga classes for just that reason.
